- Subject: [*] Print2Pict3.0
-
- This is version 3.0 of Print2Pict. It is a printer driver that previews
- and saves printed pages to PICT files or the clipboard.
- It works only under System 7 or later.
-
- Drop it in your extensions folder and select it with the Chooser.
-
- It has an on-line help you can copy to the clipboard and print using any
- word processor. It also supports Balloon Help.
-
- - Description:
-
- The PICT file format is the standard format for saving pictures on a
- Macintosh. Most of the graphical applications can read these files.
-
- If you copy a page to the clipboard, it can be paste into any document that
- can include pictures.
-
- You can use Print2Pict with any application that prints using
- the standard Macintosh interface.
-
- - What's new in version 3.0 ?
-
- % Color and high resolution pictures when possible.
- % Custom "paper" sizes.
- % Full support of System 7's Balloon Help.
- % Any scale factors in the preview window.
- % Use of extensions to add new functionality:
-
- - Print to MacPaint file: The pages are saved in MacPaint format.
- - Print to PICS: The pages are saved as the frames of a PICS movie.
- - Print to text: The text is extracted from the pages and saved in a text file.
- - PostCard: The pages are saved into a standalone application.
- You can edit a complex document with a DTP software, and then "print"
- it as a "PostCard". This postcard can then be sent to anyone,
- who can read it and print it without the DTP software.

-
- Folks, I must recant whatever naughty words I said about Norton 2 (versus
- MacTools 2), especially re Speed Disk. Running MacTools Optimizer today
- after my monthly backup, I went Hmmmm?!? when it found only four apps on
- my hard disk. Actually I said more than that. But I had put AutoDoubler
- on the 1.44M System 7 Optimizer boot disk. Aha! Eureka! Et Cetera! Auto-
- Doubler only fakes out the Finder. The 1.44M Sys/7 boot disk doesn't have
- a Finder. No way to put a Finder on that puppy and leave room for an app.
- Everything not in the System Folder was a *document* to optimizer.
-
- OK, I'll put System 6 (System and Finder) on a 1.44M boot floppy and then
- put on both AutoDoubler and MacTools Optimizer. Also put on Desktop Mgr
- and 32-bit QuickDraw. MacTools Optimizer told me its disk was dead. OK,
- I've had state-contract disks die before, much more frequently than a
- reputable brand. Break disk, trash it, and try another. Same thing. Huh?
- I'm slow, but I *can* learn. I replaced CP Optimizer on the floppy with
- Norton 2's Speed Disk. Worked like a charm. AND rebooting the HD later
- did NOT yield any snot nosed messages from AD or DD that they had been
- apparently illegally copied. No, I've no idea why I got that the first
- time I used Norton 2's Speed Disk.
-
- Incidental intelligence: SAM from a boot disk will also not recognize an
- AutoDoubled file unless the boot disk has both a System and Finder -- and
- AutoDoubler. SAM -- and every other virus program -- cannot see a virus
- signature in a compressed file.
-
- Makes for a major pain when dealing with machines that refuse to boot
- under anything "less" than System 7.01. If one of those puppies has AD
- installed, it can be neither optimized nor virus-checked if it has only
- one floppy drive.
-
- I hate computers.

-
- I tried to post this previously but don't think it
- made it through the net:
-
- In a previous letter I noted that I was trying out
- Quickback and found that my backed up files were
- larger than the originals and that if I backed up
- again immediately then it would see changes where there
- were none.
-
- Actually, it was not Quickback at fault at all...
-
- I tried copying the files from my MacIIci (system 7)
- to the server (a PC running novel) via appletalk, and
- the directly copied files ballooned in size.
-
- Does anyone out there know why this would happen?
-
- I copied the things back and they resumed their original
- size. There are no known viruses on my Mac or server
- (touch plastic)....
-
- I have a feeling that it has something to do with the
- memory allocation for Mac files on the PC ???
-
- Thanks for any suggestions....mike

- In article Info-Mac Digest V10 #129 you asked about ways to get a
- postscript file into PICT format. Two approaches come to mind:
-
- 1) use the ppm utilities on unix. I believe that ps to ppm and
- ppm to pict converters are part of the distribution.
-
- 2) Import into Illustrator or another program and print using the
- print2pict printer driver. This should provide you with a valid
- pict file that you can now edit to your hearts content.

-
- >Does Endnote Plus read MS Word's (4 and 5) footnotes?
- >How does it work with Nisus?
-
- #1: No! Word's footnotes and Endnote live in different worlds. Other
- than that, the new Endnote Plug-in Module for Word 5 is a
- dream-come-true, even better than the old EndNote under Word 4 (or under
- WriteNow).
-
- #2: Endnote treats Nisus documents as if they were pure ACSCII: You lose
- all formating, such as fonts, italics, boldfacing, sub- and
- superscripts. It is my understanding that the EndNote people would like
- to make EndNote fully Nisus-compatible, but don't have the necessary
- format information.
-
- The EndNote issue was one of my reasons why I upgraded from Word 4 to
- Word 5, and dropped Nisus, which I had used alongside with Word 4.
-
- Hope that helps!

- Sorry, my answer was quite correct.
- 1) The question was asked in the context of not having to buy
- additional software.
- 2) Running a router in the background of your Mac can slow it down,
- especially if you're routing for more than just your Mac. Generally,
- most people would not consider this an option.
-
- Again, without a router, you cannot have an EtherTalk Ethernet

- 'views' control panel does...
-
- Also, is there ANYWAY at all to overcome the gridding system that the

- Subject: Info on Apple Israel (q)
-
- Dear Netters,
-
- Does anyone out there know how Apple Computer is structured in Israel?
-
- Individuals at Yeda Computer and Software Company have inferred that they are
- part of of Apple Computer and on some of their letterheads it even says 'Apple
- Israel, LTD'. Yeda was the only distributor of Apple Computers for many years,
- which means that they had the monopoly here. They had also developed the
- Hebrew System software and distributed it.
-
- In the last couple of years other companies have begun selling Macintosh
- products here and it was recently announced that Apple USA has begun
- distributing System 7.0.1 Hebrew. I have heard a rumor that Apple USA took
- back the rights (and control of development).
-
- There are also times when Yeda says they are not Apple USA. When I first came
- here I brought a new SE/30 from the US. When the Quantum hard drive died Yeda
- would not honor the warranty because they were Apple Israel and I had bought it
- in the US. Apple Europe would honor the warranty though and most likely Apple
- Egypt would have too. I naively thought that Apple was Apple no matter which
- country you were in.
-
- So my question is, Is Yeda part of Apple or are they only an authorized
- distributor of Apple products?
-
- I am not trying to bash Yeda. I am only seeking information. Many people here
- are afraid to buy computers in the US or from other Apple representatives in
- Israel because they will not have an Apple warranty.
-
- This cannot be right (Can it?).
-
- Also, if anyone has information of who at Apple to contact about the University
- discount program, would you please contact me? Our graduate school is
- registered in New York and may qualify for the program. Currently faculty,
- students and staff buy Macs here at the same 'bargain' prices as retail (plus
- import and value added tax).
-

-
- Why most softwares companies now have installers and updaters.
- It's like we are too stupid to install the products ourselves.
- Sometimes it would be interesting to really understand what is
- happening.
- Some installers are just copying the new software over the old
- one. Are we that dumb?
- A good case is the Tuneup 1.0 and 1.1.1. Why not tell us to simply
- copy the new drivers over the old ones, add the new chooser
- and install the Tuneup Init. Why the installer for something so
- simple? If a patch is applied to the System, why not tell us?
- With updaters, you are never sure that everything was fine.
- I think it would be simpler to send the whole Init? The only
- advantage is when you want to donwload the updater.
- I know that the softwares companies won't listen, but who knows.

- BSAbits - The Newsletter
- -----------------------
- I would envision this newsletter as an intermittently
- issued product whenever there is something to communicate
- to all you folks on the mailing list. This will happen
- only if you help me with your contributions. I would
- like to trade graphics, answer questions (a-la
- comp.sys.mac.digest), review programs of use to Scouting,
- and anything else that seems to fit.
-
-
- Who am I ?
- ---------
- Let me introduce myself - my name is Mike Schatzberg and
- I am a volunteer Scouter in the Essex Council in New
- Jersey, USA. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 3,
- Caldwell, New Jersey, my son's Troop. I am also the
- District Activity Chairman, as well as a unit
- commissioner. I am working on my Wood Badge ticket,
- having finished the course last fall. Professionally, I
- am a computer technology manager at Salomon Brothers Inc,
- an investment banking firm. I enjoy combining computers
- and Scouting. Having become an addict of mac.digest and
- the other Mac newsgroups on Usenet, you can add
- networking to the list. I am, of course a Mac addict. I
- use a Mac IIci at work and have a Mac IIsi at home.
-
-
- Using Mac's for Scouting
- -----------------------
- I am always using my Macintosh for Scouting. I do flyers
- with Pagemaker, maps with MacDraw Pro, documents with
- Microsoft Word and Pagemaker. As this issue is written,
- I am creating a 30 page leader's guide for our camp, a
- price and services guide for all my Council's camps, an
- Interpretive Trail Guide, a Cub Scout summer camp map and
- several District fund raising brochures. My District
- annual dinner brochure was printed and distributed last
- week. These uses are all graphic in nature. I also use
- Microsoft Excel to produce budget documents for events
- and courses. My scanner is used to convert printed
- artwork into digital format.
-
- I have not used any of the "Troop Management and
- Tracking" programs available for the Mac. Anyone who
- knows about any such programs, please send me a review
- and see your name in print.
-
-
- Thanks to Adam and Tonya
- -----------------------
- If the format of this newsletter is familiar, you must
- be a subscriber to a wonderful Macintosh newsletter
- called TidBITS, published by Adam and Tonya Engst. If
- you own a Mac, you really should be on their mailing
- list. My thanks goes out to the Engsts for their
- permission to borrow their newsletter's format. To
- receive their newsletter, send email to: info@tidbits.halcyon.com
-
-
- The next issue
- -------------
- The next issue of this newsletter is dependent on your
- communicating with me. What graphics can you share ?
- Can you review a program based on your experiences ?
- Can we set up an anonymous file server to hold archives
- or use space on sumex or elsewhere ? What would you like
- to see in this newsletter ? Next newsletter will contain
- info about computers and the National Jamboree. Till
- then. Yours in Scouting, Mike Schatzberg

- With System 7, it's possible to create a clock like SuperClock. It's very easy.
- Open the Alarm Clock and position it to the upper left corner. After that,
- create an Alias of the Alarm Clock and put that alias in the Startup Items

-
- Hi netters,
- I have been having a small problem with my mac. The Finder freezes
- at seemingly random times. Here is my configuration:
-
- Macintosh SE Running system 7.0.1 with the latest tuneup (1.1.1 I
- believe) 20 meg hard drive 4 meg ram and an external Cutting Edge hard
- drive.
-
- The mac seems to freeze at unpredictable times. Once it froze in
- the finder while I had Zterm downloading in the background. The odd
- thing is that even though the finder froze (I could not access any
- menus, the "Sleep now" and "Never Sleep" corners defined for AfterDark
- would not work. Somehow through all of this, Ztern was still doenloading
- and updating it's own screen. This is only one example of the finder
- freezing up!
- Thus far, the oly way I have been able to get out of this situation
- has been to do a control-command-Escape to force the finder to quit.
- This may have solved the problem in the short term, but looking ahead,
- is this some new virus I've been infected with? (I should not that to
- try to fix the problem I reinstalled system 7.0.1 and the tuneup, but
- the problem still persisted.)
-
- I have noticed the same problem on a Mac IIsi, but much less
- frequently. Am I imagining things or what??

- Thanks,

-
- That is why I teach beeginners using 6.0.x using finder and later
- move them to Multifinder then System 7.
-
- >By the way, most
- >people who complained of this problem thought they need more disk space.
-
- This must be taught early, soon after they learn "What is an application."
- Using Finder, I say that Finder is in memory. I have them verify that by
- checking the "About the Finder" under the Apple menu. Then, they open
- an application and I tell them that this app is in memory, which they
- verify by checking the About menu in the Apple menu.
-
- Then I make my analogy that disk space is like a calender while memory
- is analogously like our memory. I tell them I can only remember a few
- appointments at a time but I can read the appointments from my calender
- any time. Once I read these, they will be in my memory.
-
- Then we go over a handout where the student has to answer (in writing)
- if memory (RAM), disk space or both are being used. I use the key words
- Open, Save, etc.
-
- Finally, I tell them that if they don't call disk space memory, they'll
- be OK, but if they DO call disk space memory, they will succeed only in
- outfoxing themselves.
-
- If I don't teach the student this very early, it becomes a 30 minute
- process to teach it because they are CONVINCED that memory and disk
- space are the same. -- Pete Tamas

- Yeah I had a poor experience of sorts..after admiring the Software
- Toolworks World Atlas ads Tiger Software ran, I ordered it and got it
- short time. An update to work on my LC followed right away. They even
- gave me some of that anti-static spray free.
-
- Sounds good, right? Well, in Tiger's ads for the World Atlas, they
- show several screen shots. Some of them are of large-scale maps showing
- multiple countries..one in particular, however, clearly showed a
- smaller-scale map of the U.S., in fact one section of California (I
- think) showing cities, towns, and major highways.
-
- I ordered the program, impressed that it would give that level of
- detail. It didn't.
-
- In fact, it didn't go to that scale; there were no highway maps of
- the sort pictured in the screen shots.
-
- A call to Tiger confirmed that that one picture was a mistake, it
- was actually from the U.S. Atlas program from Software Toolworks
- which was (and I think still is) ONLY available on PC's. They had
- no idea when the U.S. one might be available, which is the one that
- would show highways and the like.
-
- I kept the program, because it still had a lot in it. Tiger didn't
- offer a refund, but then again I didn't ask. On the other hand, I
- know I've seen that same darn screen shot of U.S. highways in their
- ads since then...how recently, I don't know.
-
- I recently got a big glossy catalog from them..their prices weren't

- >click it, I just get a Type -39 error. This happened to me before, and
- >more and more applications started having this kind of problem. What
- >exactly does this mean anyway?
-
- Error -39 is end of file not found. Usually it means the application,
- or possibly a prefs file it loads on startup, isn't there anymore. I've
- had it happen on rare occasions (probably a result of a system crash).
- The inevitable solution has been to replace the clobbered file from
- backup.
-
- If you are having "more and more" of this problem, you should run Disk
- First Aid and Norton's Disk Doctor or MacTool's 2.0 DiskFix (you may
- have a disk directory in need of repair).
-
- How long has it been since you defragmented your drive? The combination
- of a fault in the disk's extents directory and a highly fragmented drive
- can sure lead to lost ends of files.
-
- BTW (as long as I'm on the soap box): My impressions of MacTools 2.0.
-
- Mirrors is EONS slower than the earlier version (I sure hope it's that
- much better in the event I need to recover something because it sure is
- annoying when it kicks in).
-
- Maybe I just don't understand CP DiskEdit (geez, I might actually have
- to read the manual :). I don't see the handy verify file and disk
- commands that the earlier FileEdit has (so I've kept FileEdit around).
-
- I don't really miss FastCopy because I prefer Apple's DiskCopy (because
- it makes copies to unformatted disks without requiring the delay of
- formatting).
-
- DiskFix may be worth the price of the package. I've been having a
- disagreement between Disk First Aid and Norton's Disk Doctor about the
- proper number of nodes in my drive's B-tree (each wanted to reverse the
- other's "repair"). DiskFix agrees with Disk First Aid. Disk Doctor and
- DiskFix argue about the proper setting of bundle bits on the same three
- or four files (darned if I know which is right about that -- I guess
- I'll have to wait until some document can't find it's application to
- sort that one out). DiskFix seems slower than DiskDoctor (maybe it
- works harder :) although I'm not entirely sure that's perceptual rather
- than actual (Disk Doctor has more little animations while it's working).
-
- It may be some time before we know whether DiskDoctor or DiskFix are
- better or about the same.
-
- MacTool's Optimizer will now prioritize by dates as well as file types
- which is handy since AutoDoubler makes practically everything that's not
- in the System Folder look like a document (one of these days CP or
- Norton will get together with Salient and write an optimizer that can
- find the real type/creator in an AD document).

-
- First tar'ed, then compressed using the Unix compress command. To unpack
- a tar.Z file, get it onto your unix system, then use 'uncompress <filename>'
- to uncompress it. You'll then have a tar file that you can extract with
- 'tar -xvf <filename>'.

- You're not all wet! Everybody's new to something...

-
- Not quite, Randy. Files with the tar.Z suffix have been tar'ed and then
- *compressed*. Use the unix "uncompress" command on the file. Then you
- will have a tar (Tape ARchive) file. Run the .tar file through the unix
- tar utility (with the -x option) to get your files out. One command
- *EVERY* Unix user should know is "man". Type "man uncompress" and "man
- tar" for info about how to use these commands. I recommend reading the
- entire man page on a command before using it. They aren't very long,
- and they can save you a tremendous amount of time.

- Is there a Virtus Walkthrough Demo on sumex somewhere?!? I called Virtus
- and they replied that they only have demos on America Online & CompuServe.
- It could have migrated to sumex, and I have no way to ftp there, but I do
- have ftp-mail capabilities, and anonymous mail requests ability.
- Much appreciated in advance...

- Subject: WORD-MAC, how to (re-)subscribe
-
- Hello everybody,
- due to some confusion, I was unable to resubscribe to the WORD-MAC list
- after it had moved to LOKI.UNE.EDU.AU . The address that had been given
- in WORD-MAC, Vol 10 Nr 37 was just wrong. One kind user finally mailed
- me the correct account to mail (thanks again, Jerry). Since I also got
- some mail from other poeple with subscribtion problems I repeat the
- correct address here.
-
- To subscribe to the WORD-MAC list, send mail to
- LISTSERV@LOKI.UNE.EDU.AU
- with the body text
- SUCBSCRIBE WORD-MAC firstname lastname
-
- Good luck, Matthias

-
- I have noticed that after I installed Word 5 there is a slight
- but ever so annoying delay after I type each letter in a document.
- I increased the memory allocation and put the application on a
- different hard drive but I still get the same annoying delay.
- Any ideas or common experiences?
